Are Shops Open on Public Holidays in France?

Updated: May 2026

If you are visiting France, a jour férié can catch you out: many shops, banks and offices close, and transport runs a reduced timetable. Here is what to expect — and how to plan so a holiday doesn't ruin your day.

Usually closed

  • Banks and post offices — closed on all public holidays.
  • Most non-food shops and shopping centres — closed, especially outside tourist zones.
  • Government offices and many businesses — closed.
  • Large supermarkets — often closed, or open only in the morning. 1 May is the strictest: almost everything shuts.

Often open (at least partly)

  • Bakeries (boulangeries) — many open in the morning; bread is a near-daily essential.
  • Pharmacies — a duty rota (pharmacie de garde) always covers emergencies.
  • Restaurants and cafés — many open, particularly in cities and tourist areas, though some take the day off.
  • Small convenience stores in tourist districts often stay open.

Transport and museums

Public transport generally runs on a Sunday or holiday timetable — services exist but are less frequent, and the last departures may be earlier. Major museums and monuments are often open (some close on specific days regardless of holidays), but it is worth checking each venue. Tourist attractions in Paris and other big cities are the most reliable.

The strictest day: 1 May

Labour Day is the quietest day of the French year. Because it is the only universally protected paid holiday, the overwhelming majority of shops, supermarkets and services close. Public transport is minimal. If you are travelling on 1 May, stock up the day before and expect a slow, shuttered city — the main activity is the traditional union marches and the sale of lily-of-the-valley (muguet) on the street.

How to plan around holidays

  • Buy groceries and cash the day before a holiday.
  • Check museum and attraction websites for holiday hours.
  • Allow extra time for reduced transport schedules.
  • Look up the pharmacie de garde if you need medication.
  • Remember that the day after a holiday can be very busy as everyone catches up.
