Frequently asked questions
Does strikethrough text work on Discord?
Both methods work on Discord. The native ~~text~~ markdown produces a native strikethrough rendered by the client. The Unicode combining method (U+0336) works in usernames and bios where markdown is not supported.
Why does strikethrough work on Instagram and Twitter?
These platforms display Unicode text as-is without stripping combining characters. The strikethrough effect is embedded in the string itself, so any app rendering the text shows the line — including mobile apps.
What is the Unicode character for strikethrough?
The main character is U+0336 (COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY). It is appended after each letter, telling the rendering engine to draw a horizontal line through the preceding character. The double style also uses U+0335 (COMBINING SHORT STROKE OVERLAY).
Is it safe to paste the output anywhere?
Yes. The output is plain Unicode text — no HTML, no special markup. It pastes identically into any text field that accepts Unicode, including code editors, spreadsheets, and mobile keyboards.
Why does the text look different in some fonts?
Combining characters render on top of the base character. The exact position of the line depends on the font metrics. Most modern system fonts (Segoe UI, San Francisco, Roboto, Noto) render it correctly.
Can I strikethrough only part of a sentence?
Yes — type the full sentence in the input, then select only the words you want struck in the output and copy that selection. Or type only the words to strike, copy them, then paste them into your message alongside the normal text.
