Flip Text for WhatsApp — Send Upside Down Messages

Updated: May 2026

WhatsApp transmits Unicode text faithfully between devices, which means a flipped upside-down message generated on this website arrives on the recipient's phone looking exactly as intended — no special app, no plugin and no WhatsApp Business feature required.

Generate your flipped WhatsApp message in seconds.

How to send upside down text on WhatsApp

  • Open the Upside Down Text Generator in your mobile or desktop browser.
  • Type or paste the message you want to flip.
  • Choose a mode: Flip for upside-down characters (same order), Reverse for backwards text, or Flip & Reverse for both.
  • Tap Copy result.
  • Switch to WhatsApp, open the chat and long-press the message field to paste.
  • Send. The recipient sees the flipped text instantly.

On Android, you can open the generator in Chrome, copy the result, then switch to WhatsApp using the back button or app switcher — the clipboard persists. On iPhone, the same flow works in Safari.

WhatsApp formatting and Unicode compatibility

WhatsApp has its own text formatting syntax for bold (*bold*), italic (_italic_), strikethrough (~strike~) and monospace (`code`). Upside-down Unicode characters can be combined with these:

  • *ɥǝʃʃo* — bold upside-down "hello".
  • _oʃʃǝɥ_ — italic reversed "hello".
  • ~ɥǝʃʃo~ — strikethrough upside-down "hello".

The formatting markers and the Unicode characters are independent — WhatsApp applies its markdown formatting on top of whatever characters are between the markers. This allows you to layer multiple effects on a single line.

Where else flipped text works in WhatsApp

  • Chat messages (individual and group): any message body accepts Unicode. Send flipped messages to any contact or group.
  • About / Status bio: the "About" field in WhatsApp Settings accepts Unicode text. A flipped status like ǝʃqɯɐᴉʃɐʌɐ (available, flipped) or a reversed tagline stands out in contact profiles.
  • Story captions: when you post a WhatsApp Story (a status photo or video), the caption field accepts Unicode. A flipped caption adds a distinctive visual treatment.
  • Business profile description: WhatsApp Business accounts can use flipped Unicode in the business description field, though this should be used sparingly to keep the profile readable.
  • WhatsApp Web and Desktop: the Windows and macOS desktop apps and WhatsApp Web all support the same Unicode character set. Paste from the generator into any of these clients and the result will look identical.

Does the recipient need any special setup?

No. The upside-down characters are part of the Unicode standard supported by iOS, Android, Windows and macOS without any additional fonts or configuration. When the message arrives on the recipient's phone, their OS renders each Unicode code point using the system font. The result looks the same whether they are on a Samsung Galaxy, an iPhone 16, a Pixel or any other modern smartphone.

Older devices running Android 4 or iOS 8 and earlier may have limited coverage of some less common Unicode blocks (particularly the Canadian Syllabics characters used for some capital letter replacements), but these OS versions represent a tiny and declining fraction of active WhatsApp users in 2026.

Flip text vs WhatsApp's built-in text tricks

WhatsApp's native formatting (*bold*, _italic_, ~strike~, `code`) is a Markdown subset that only works in WhatsApp. Upside-down Unicode characters, by contrast, are universal — they look exactly the same whether the message is forwarded to Telegram, copied into an email or screenshotted and posted on Instagram. This portability makes Unicode flipped text more versatile than any platform-specific trick.

Frequently asked questions

Does flipped text display correctly in WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp uses the system's Unicode text renderer on iOS and Android. Upside-down characters display correctly for all recipients on modern devices.

Does the recipient need any special app?

No. The characters are standard Unicode. Any device with a modern OS — iPhone, Android, WhatsApp Web on a computer — renders them correctly without special configuration.

Can I use upside down text in WhatsApp status messages?

Yes. Both the About field and Story captions accept Unicode characters. Paste flipped text from the generator into any of these fields.

Can I combine flipped text with WhatsApp bold or italic formatting?

Yes. Wrap flipped characters in *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic or ~tildes~ for strikethrough. WhatsApp applies the markdown formatting on top of the Unicode characters.
